For some reason (water levels, temperatures or food supply) thousands or Sand Hill Cranes flocked to the Paynes Prairie for the winter. Lucky for everyone, there was a trail (La Chua Trail) right next to their roosting acres. This shot was taken early in the morning when the fog was so thick that you could only hear the birds. The sun started to burn off spots of fog, and there I was with my camera. Over 5,000 of these large birds stayed several months before migrating back North.
I hope you enjoy this image as much as I do. The cranes do come back every year, but not in the numbers they did that year. So many cranes arrived that year that the County built board walks for the visitors - and also started to charge an entrance fee. It is worth it to see the marsh critters.
Retired and am starting to love the challenges that each image presents to the camera. Searching for my 'perfect' image(s) if there is such a thing. No specialties yet, everything is fair game.

Wow - this must have been amazing to experience in person. If this recurs, please give me a heads up!

After this huge gathering of cranes left the Paynes Prairie that year, they never returned in such numbers again. We were so lucky to have them so close to us.

Wonderful! Almost like a fine etching.
Farol Tomson replied:
Some local businessman bought the largest size of this print and had it matted and framed for his office. Thanks for the kind words.

Keep going back, just like they do, I love these shots.

Thanks, Laura.
