Description
This lighthouse marking the confluence of Rondout Creek and the Hudson River was built in 1837, warning mariners of the shallow tidal flats surrounding the creekâs mouth. The wooden structure was built on a rectangular pier and consisted of a frame dwelling topped by a tower. Ice floes and tidal currents wreaked havoc on the wooden structure, and it was replaced in 1867 by a bluestone lighthouse, known as Rondout I, built on a cut stone base. Roundout I was a substantial lighthouse with a parlor, dining room, and kitchen on the first floor and three bedrooms and a watchroom on the second floor. Steps in the watchroom led to the lantern room. Interesting story at http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=679
